What are Graphene Nano Platelets (GNPs)?

GNPs are ultra-thin, multi-layered graphene flakes that enhance mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties in materials like polymers, coatings, composites and concrete.

How do GNPs differ from other graphene forms?

GNPs offer a balance of performance, dispersibility and affordability, making them ideal for industrial-scale applications.

How is the product produced?

Blacks Swan Graphene use a process of High Shear Liquid Phase Exfoliation (HSLPE) using a number of patented processes. The core process uses a patent licensed from Trinity College Dublin, where BSG is the sole licensee, supported by a number of process patents granted across the globe utilising our internal intellectual property.

Benefits

What advantages do BSG’s GNPs provide?

Typical benefits seen in multiple applications areas are:

  • Barrier enhancement: Reduces gas, moisture and hydrocarbon permeability (ideal for packaging).
  • Mechanical strength: Improves tensile strength and durability in polymers.
  • Lightweighting (often referred to as downgauging): Increase in strength with minimal addition allows reduction in use of core polymer.
  • Abrasion resistance: Improves the abrasion resistance of moving parts
  • Chemical and U.V resistance: Improves Chemical and U.V resistance of plastics

Which polymers are compatible with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)?

Graphene delivers benefits across commodity plastics, engineering plastics, and high-performance engineering plastics.

Our focus is on making graphene easy to adopt. We offer Graphene Enhanced Masterbatch (GEM™) as a ready-to-use additive supplied through an established, reliable supply chain. Customers can purchase and process it just like any other additive masterbatch, such as carbon black, color concentrates, or flame retardants; whether it is used alongside these materials or as a replacement. Our priority is performance and cost efficiency.

We have developed standard Graphene Enhanced Masterbatches™ in thermoplastic polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, polypropylene, and polyethylene. These materials make it simple for customers to evaluate and introduce graphene into their products.

Custom versions of these and other resins are available with short lead times through our Graphene Enhanced Masterbatch partners. We are building a growing library of “Made with GEM™” solutions, and customers can license this logo for use on their products as a strong marketing message.

Where can GNPs be used?

  • Packaging: Improved barrier properties (oxygen/moisture resistance) such as PET bottles
  • Automotive: Lightweight, durable components.
  • White goods: Lighter and long-lasting parts with improved wear and tear resistance.
  • Gasoline and chemical containers: With improved chemical resistance and permeability especially against gases and hydrocarbons
  • Textiles: Enhanced PET and PA fibres (e.g., sportswear).
  • Footwear:  lighter footwear parts with improved wear resistance
  • Industrial parts and conveyer belts:
  • Compostable and bio polymers: To enhance the barrier properties of compostable polymer compounds such as PLA, PBAT, PHA
  • Coatings and Paint industry: To produce long lasting paints and for corrosion resistance applications
  • Cement & Concrete: Reduced cracking, higher tensile strength. Lower CO₂ emissions via reduced cement use.

Can GNPs be used for electrical conductivity?

BSG’s GNPs are optimized for mechanical, barrier properties and thermal conductivity. Higher loading/ let down ratios of GNP is required for electrical conductivity.

Are GNPs safe to handle?

Yes. Our GNPs comply with REACH, OSHA, and industry safety standards.

How are GNPs typically integrated into polymers and products?

Through melt compounding, or by adding readily available of masterbatches (GEM).

Graphene Enhanced Masterbatch™ (GEM™)

What is GEM™?

GEM™ is a pre-dispersed graphene masterbatch that simplifies graphene integration into polymers. It ensures uniform dispersion without pre-processing.

Until recently, using graphene had been difficult, since it was expensive and difficult to disperse. Using GEM™ from our approved masterbatch partners reduces that barrier to entry with low-cost masterbatches that can be let down to typical loading levels of 0.1~1.0% GNP in final compound.

Why choose GEM™ over raw GNPs?

Experienced OEMs may well be comfortable with handling powder, but generally GEM™ eliminates complex dispersion steps, saving time and ensuring consistent performance making a graphene trials quicker and easier, reducing barrier to entry.

What are the advantages of GEM™?

  • Ease of use: Ready-to-process pellets.
  • Consistency: Uniform graphene distribution.
  • Performance: Enhances strength, thermal stability, and barrier properties.

What GEM™ formulations does BSG offer?

Please see the Products page each dispersed in a typical resin (e.g., TPU, PET. HDPE, PP, PA). The “standard” GEM™ allows let-down into a specific polymer to investigate the performance. Often this will suffice in noncritical applications, but where specific features are required a customer GEM™ can be prepared typically in a couple of weeks with specific polymer resin.

Can GEM™ be customized?

Yes. We work with clients to tailor graphene loadings and polymer bases.

Who are your approved GEM™ partners?

You can view our list of Partners here.

How is GEM™ processed?

GEM™ solutions are compatible with standard methods like injection moulding, extrusion, rotation and blow moulding.

Which industries use GEM™?

  • 3D Printing: Reinforced filaments.
  • Inflatables: Rafts and Jacket made of TPU
  • Metal replacements: Replacing metal parts with Graphene enhanced PA or other engineering plastics

Which polymers are GEM™ compatible with?

TPU, PET, PA, PLA, PP, PE and selected engineering plastics.

Do you offer technical support for GEM™ integration?
